Find the perfect foundation

Technological advancement can be beautiful. Science is responsible for a whole new crop of foundations that are formulated to look like your own skin (Try Estee Lauder Minute Makeup Crème Stick Foundation or Clarins Ultra-Satin foundation.) “When you get the shade right, these products can make you look incredible,” says New York City makeup artist Martel Thompson. But the converse is true, too: the wrong shade can make flaws look a lot worse than they actually are. So, how are you supposed to find your perfect foundation? The easiest way is to head to your favorite cosmetics counter and make the salesperson do the work for you. Ask her to apply a few prospective shades to a small section of your face. Then, ask for a small mirror, go outside and examine your skin in daylight. If any of the shades seems to disappear, you’ve found your match. If not, keep trying—your diligence will pay off. – Olivia Vale

Step 1: Prep skin with a lightweight foundation. For a matte finish that will keep the focus on eyes, zap excess oil with pressed powder, says Blandino. To try: Almay Powder Skin Stays Clean.
Step 2: Using a deep purple of black eyeliner (such as CG Smoothers Eyeliner in Onyx), follow the contour of upper and lower lashes. Then sweep a shadow in a similar tone across lids. The hottest shades are plum, eggplant and lavender—are super wearable says Strong. Follow with a pale highlighter just above the crease. To try: M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Nocturnelle. Rimmel Metallic Eye Gloss in Notting Hill. For a range of color options, choose a multihued palette like Victoria’s Secret Eye Artistry Shadowing Pallette in pastel Plum or Revlon Illuminance Crème Shadow in wild Orchids. Go for glamour with a gold shade, says Wende Zomnir, creative director of Urban Decay. Curl lashes and apply two coats of thickening mascara, such as Dior MaximEyes Mascara in Plum.
Step 3: Impart a natural dewiness with a translucent gel on the apples of your cheeks. Golden shades flatter a tawny tone, while pinks are best for fair complexions, say Zomnir.
Step 4: Finish with a nude gloss.

Faking a little color is always your safest bet, but the current trend isn’t faux bronze, its faux rosy. Looking as if you just got back from a jog can be prettier than having a deep-brown tan. A flushed face appears as if you’ve been playing outside, not sunning for hour. You can get the look without getting off your duff. Pat a lip-and-cheek gel onto your mouth and areas the sun would hit if it were above you—across the top of your cheeks, bridge of your nose and your upper forehead. Be sure to dab it over a light weight moisturizer and lip balm; putting it on over foundation creates an unnatural look. Complement your sun-kissed skin by making eyes sparkle: Dot a neutral, shimmery eye gloss onto the inner corner either with your finger or a small angled brush. Leave the lids bare and no one will guess you’re wearing makeup. Although they may suspect you’ve been skimping on the sunscreen. –Zoe Walder
